Quote Reply Topic: Ring and Pinion Change Posted: Dec/21/2021 at 10:12am: I'm pulling the rear end assembly out of my '74 AMX and have a question about the ring and pinion gear set. It has 3.15 ratio now ("B" stamped on the axle housing ) and an open carrier. I want to install 3.54 gears and a limited slip carrier.
Yes, you could actually change only the ring and pinion and nothing else. Is it a good idea? Probably not unless the unit has very low mileage. Unless you are absolutely limited in funds, and because it is a pain to remove the rear gear unit, I would at least change the carrier and pinion bearings and the yoke and pinion seals.
Step 7: Remove pin in the differential. It is held in by 1 bolt. Take out bolt, and then pull the pin out. You will have to reach into the housing and push bottom side a little bit and then pull pin out or spin the carrier around, get the pin started, spin it back around and then pull the pin the rest of the way out.
The place is called the "Ring & Pinion Shop". That's all these guys do!! Make an appointment, BAM your cars out in 2 hours, done right. Don't try this yourself unless you've done it before, and have done it right. Look at it this way, ring & pinion $200, installation kit w/bearings $120, couple hours labor $130.
A broken ring gear will allow the differential to propel the vehicle for about eight feet at a time, then bang or grind as the section with broken teeth tries to engage the pinion. Depending on ratio, a broken pinion tooth (or teeth) will clunk about every two or three feet. A broken axle is easily determined.

RANDYS carries the widest selection of ring and pinion gear sets in the industry, and we offer kits with all the small parts you need for proper installation, kits that include a traction adder like a Yukon Dura Grip LSD or one of our Yukon lockers, and we also offer gear kits that include a combination of …
I was getting some help from a guy who rebuilds and manufactures quick change and other banjo rear ends exclusively.. He told me that if you set pinion preload and assemble the bells, the torque to turn the pinion shaft is the sum of pinion torque plus the carrier. Thus for example if pinion is 10 in lb and total is 18 then carrier is 8.
Hi guys, a buddy of mine is having hard times finding a "faster" ratio for his truck, axle is an old Eaton HO72 . ring and pinion ratio is now 4.56:1, doing a research on the web we found a 4.10: wich is fairly good but we also found a 3.90:1 (wich would be great) early version wich apparently was available in the '60 era and very hard to find nowadays, please tell us if …
If you want to change R&Ps, use a 4.37. But the one in your 66 trans is no good to you. As racerdave said above, your 66's R&P's ring gear has only 6 threaded holes while your diff has 8. You need to get a later splined German made 4.37 R&P. They exist, any trans shop should be able to help you out.
My 03 Deuce is on the lift right now. Teeth missing from the ring gear and the starter pinion gear. Typical starter kick back issue at hand here, however, I cannot decide which gear ratio to go with on the replacement parts. Factory is 102 ring gear and is notorious for breakage on engines that have been modified.
The pinion shaft is the first item to install during a rebuild. You need to remove the top shaft with the synchro hubs to do this. To carry out any of the above, you need to drive shafts with a long drift, (sometimes a 10lb hammer is required to move them) from both the rear & front of the transaxle
Bought a 66 Mustang 6 cyl 200 yoke that is almost like my 65. Difference is: 1. 66 yoke shaft is slightly lower than my 65 shaft, but rock shield on the 66 is higher than my 65. I installed the 66 yoke with new pinion seal in diff last night. I placed med thread lock on pinion shaft and sealant on pinion nut.
(8) The pattern is a product of the pinion depth AND the backlash- you have to get both right. You change shims for the pinion depth THEN try to adjust the backlash. If the pattern won't come right, you need to change pinion shims and try again. (9) Once it's looking right, mark the whole ring gear and do step (7) again.
C6 Tech/Performance - What do I to replace the ring and pinion. - I just got my first vette. It's an 06 C6 Auto with the paddle shifters. I love the car but, damn thing needs some get up and go. It currently has a super low 2.56 ratio and I want to change it to probably 3.42 and I think that is the highest I can go...
If the pinion gear is stub-born and binds up, use a ballpeen hammer to drive it out. But you must protect the gear threads if you are going to reuse the pinion. If that is the case, thread the pinion nut back onto the pinion and use a bigger hammer. The pinion nut is always replaced so you don't need to worry about damaging it.
This new power practically ended starting problems for motorcycles on all but very high compression big inch engines. Along with the new starter there was a new jackshaft and gear ratio for the pinion and ring gear. The pinion was a 9 tooth and the ring gear was a 66 tooth. This is a 7.33:1 gear ratio.
setting up gears isnt that difficult, granted parts are alot heavier for a D80 compared to a 30/44/60. its very time consuming for someone that has never done one before. your best bet is to buy to set of carrier bearings and make yourself a set of "set up bearings". if you need to know how google it. the only real "specialty" tools youll need are a splitbearing …
