The basidiomycete Ustilago scitaminea Sydow, which causes sugarcane smut disease, has been spreading throughout Africa and America since the 1940s. The genetic diversity and structure of different populations of this fungus worldwide was investigated using microsatellites. A total of 142 single-teliospore were isolated from 77 distinct whips ...
Sugarcane plants are affected by multiple microorganisms, where among them is Sporisorium scitamineum (Syd.) M. Piepenbr., M. Stoll, and F. Oberw. (Ustilago scitaminea Sydow), the causal agent of smut.It currently occurs in over 64 countries and sugarcane regions, in many of which, it causes a significant amount of damage [].This damage increases in the …
• Reino: Fungi …
Smut disease in sugarcane caused by the fungus Ustilago scitaminea (H and P Sydow) occurs in all sugarcane-producing countries except Papua New Guinea, and has produced epidemics in several parts of the world. The disease has been severe in nearly all countries at one time or another [1] and can be sufficiently severe to threaten the agricultural …
The most recent diseases to appear in the western hemisphere are: leaf scald, caused by the bacterium Xanthomonas albilineans (Ashby) Dowson, which arrived in USA (Florida) in 1967; smut, caused by the fungus Ustilago scitaminea Sydow, in 1978; rust, caused by the fungus Puccinia melanocephala H. & P., in 1979; and yellow-leaf syndrome, caused ...

The major route of entry of the smut fungus (Ustilago scitaminea Sydow) is through the bud (Fawcett, 1944; Bock, 1964; Waller, 1970). Young buds are very susceptible to infection with resistance increasing with bud age (Bock, 1964; Byther and Steiner, 1974). Before infection occurs the spores must germinate on the bud surface.
